NO ONE GETS THE COVETED LOAD100 NUMBER.
YOUNG MISTER FERNOW IS BACK IN TOWN WITH HIS SINGULAR TAKE ON THE PERFORMANCE NOISE ASPECT. IN 4 TRACKS THAT UNFOLD OVER ABOUT 45 MINUTES, PLEASURE GROUND TAKES IN SEVERAL DIFFERENT MOODS WITHIN ONE TRACK (ADMITTEDLY DIFFERENT SHADES OF NEGATIVITY, HATE, AND TRAUMATISED!).
TAKE THE OPENER 'MILITARY ROAD'. HIGH PITCHED TONES GIVE WAY TO A STRANGE VOCAL ASSAULT. IT'S LIKE THE ATTACK IS SET UP WAY HIGH AND THE DECAY IS IMMEDIATE. THE YELLED VOICE JUST SEEMS TO RANDOMLY APPEAR AND DISAPPEAR, CONTAINED BY NO TRADITIONAL MEASURES SUCH AS BAR LINES OR TEMPO. AFTER THAT THE TONES BECOME WARMER (THOUGH STILL ATONAL).
'EARTHWORKS/BURIED IN SECRET' HEADS TOWARD SOMETHING RESEMBLING GOTH NOISE, THE TYPE OF MUSIC THAT I THINK FERNOW IS ABSOLUTELY THE KING OF; THESE GENTLE AND MOVING REVERBS COMPETING WITH RAW NOISE AND UNABASHED FURY. WHEN HE IS IN PURE NOISE MODE I DON'T SEE WHAT DISTINGUISHES HIM FROM ANY ONE OF LITERALLY 1000S OF IMITATORS.
THE THIRD TRACK IS A LOT MORE SPACIOUS AND GIVES US SOME BREATHING ROOM BEFORE ANOTHER GOTH/NOISE STORMER IN 'APPLE TREE VICTIM'. THIS IS A PRETTY SATISFYING PRURIENT RECORD AND IF YOU'RE LOOKING FOR SOMEWHERE TO DIVE INTO HIS OLD STUFF HAVING HEARD FROZEN NIAGARA FALLS THEN I GUESS THIS ISN'T A BAD ENTRY POINT AT ALL. IT DOES BECOME A BIT ONE NOTE, EVEN IF THAT NOTE IS MORE LOVELY THAN PREVIOUS PRURIENT, AND EVEN IF IT IS A NICER NOTE.
SYSTEMATIC BUT NOT NECESSARILY FAIR REVIEWS OF AS MUCH OF THE LOAD RECORDS DISCOGRAPHY AS I CAN FIND OR ABIDE (no I do not have downloads)
