I DO NOT KNOW IF LIGHTNING BOLT BURST INTO THE OVERGROUND WITH THIS RECORD OR WHETHER IT WAS WHERE I CAME IN (WONDERFUL RAINBOW) BUT 1. I AM FAMOUSLY BEHIND THE CURVE A LOT AND 2. I AM IN THE WRONG COUNTRY TO REALLY ASSESS. NONETHELESS I THINK A LOT OF PEOPLE THINK OF RIDE THE SKIES AS THE "REAL" FIRST LIGHTNING BOLT ALBUM, WHICH IS WRONG, BECAUSE THE YELLOW ALBUM IS REEEEEEEALLLLY GOOD.
YOU CAN SEE THEY'RE STILL VERY MUCH ENTRENCHED IN THE PROVIDENCE RHODE ISLAND NOISE THING THOUGH. TRACKS 1 AND 2 ARE CALLED "FORCEFIELD" AND "ST. JACQUES" RESPECTIVELY. THEY RIDE THE SKIES WITH THEIR RIDE AND DIE DAY 1 HOMIES AND I LOVE IT.
ANYWAY THE BASIC REASON AS FAR AS I CAN TELL THAT THIS IS CONSIDERED THE REAL LP 1 IS THAT IT HAS A CONSISTENT RECORDING FIDELITY AND IS MAYBE A MORE MATURE PRODUCT THAN WHAT PRECEDED WITH IT. MY FRIENDS, THAT IS WHAT A "REBOOT" IS. IT'S LIKE THOSE NUDNIKS WHO THINK DAVID BOWIE'S DISCOGRAPHY STARTS WITH THE S/T WITH SPACE ODDITY ON. I'M SORRY, IT ISN'T. GUY WAS MAKING STUFF FOR 7 YEARS OR SO BEFORE HE LATCHED ONTO AN IDEA THAT DIDN'T SUCK (OK I LIKE LOVE YA TIL TUESDAY).
I DO NOT THINK IT IS REALLY WISE TO TALK ABOUT INFLUENCES WHEN WE CONSIDER LIGHTNING BOLT. I AM NOT SAYING THEY DON'T HAVE THEM AND I RECKON THEY'RE PROBABLY DEEPER AND MORE INTERESTING THAN "OTHER BANDS THAT HAVE A DRUMS + MELODY INSTRUMENT DUO SET-UP". THEY'RE A PRODUCT MORE THAN ANYTHING OF THIS PLAYFUL 90S DIY CULTURE: THEY MAKE ART IN LOTS OF FORMS AND THEN THEY GET OUT ON THE ROAD AND WORK HARD. IT'S POST-MODERN IN A SENSE I CAN GET ALONG WITH, THE SYNTHESIZING OF A MILLION KEENLY FELT LOVES PERFORMED IN A JOYFUL RELEASE.
AROUND THE TIME THIS CAME OUT METALLICA WOULD HAVE BEEN HOLED UP MAKING ST. ANGER. IT'S INTERESTING TO COMPARE BECAUSE I DOUBT LIGHTNING BOLT SPENT AS MUCH TIME LAYING DOWN THIS WHOLE ALBUM AS METALLICA DID IN SPLICING TOGETHER 'FRANTIC' AND AT I DARESAY LESS THAN 1% OF THE COST. RIDE THE SKIES KICKS JUST AS MUCH ASS AS RIDE THE LIGHTNING DID BACK IN 1984. STAY RELEVANT OR GTFO.
IN CASE YOU CAN'T TELL THIS ALBUM IS GOOD. 13 MONSTERS IS THE POP HIT (IN RELATIVE TERMS) AND THERE IS A SLIGHTLY MORE SONG ORIENTED APPROACH TO BE FOUND. IT MIXES SLEDGEHAMMER HEAVINESS WITH A LIGHTNESS AND PLAY THAT I FIND IRRESISTIBLE WHEN PUT IN TANDEM.
CERTIFIED: GOOD
