SIX FINGER SATELLITE - CLONE THEORY 12" (LOAD 008)

PROVIDENCE BOYS MADE GOOD BEFORE THE BIRTH OF LOAD RECORDS. THEY DID MOST OF THEIR RELEASES ON SUB POP DURING THEIR ORIGINAL RUN IN THE 1990S.

I QUITE LIKE SIX FINGER SATELLITE AS IT HAPPENS. THEY GET CALLED ELECTRO-ROCK AND SYNTH-PUNK AND I DON'T THINK THAT IS FAR OFF BUT IN THE WAY THAT HUSKER DU ARE "POP PUNK". EVEN THOUGH THE GENRE CREATES A PARTICULARLY BAD FRAGRANCE THAT IS BASICALLY WHAT THEY DO AND THEY DO IT WELL.

THIS IS A SOLID RELEASE BUT CLEARLY A STOPGAP BETWEEN TWO PROPER ALBUMS ON SUB POP. THE SCANT INFORMATION I CAN FIND ABOUT LINE-UP SUGGESTS THIS IS A NEW ONE BEDDING IN AHEAD OF THE PARANORMALIZED ALBUM. THEY'RE MOODY INSTRUMENTALS MOSTLY. CONSIDERING HISSING PRIGS IN STATIC COUTURE BY BRAINIAC WAS THE SAME YEAR IT DOESN'T STACK UP AGAINST THAT ACHIEVEMENT IN ART. BUT IT'S COOL.

THERE ARE TWO IMAGES OF SIX FINGER SATELLITE - THIS ONE AND ONE WHERE THEY ARE WEARING EXPENSIVE SUITS AND LOOKING LIKE THEY JUST DID A TON OF COKE. I PREFER THIS ONE BECAUSE THEY LOOK LIKE FUCKING DORKS AND NO BAND ON LOAD RECORDS IS ALLOWED TO HAVE EVER ONCE FLIRTED WITH A VERSION OF COOL RECOGNISABLE TO THE MAN ON THE STREET. IT'S THE LAW.

BECAUSE OF THE LINE-UP CHANGE I DON'T KNOW IF JOHN MCLEAN WAS IN THE GROUP AT THIS TIME BUT HE WOULD GO ON TO BE A BIG WHEEL DOWN AT DFA AS WELL AS KEEPING IN WITH SOME OF THE LOAD BANDS ON PRODUCTION DUTIES. THERE'S ALSO SOME CROSSOVER HERE WITH A LATER LOAD BAND CALLED MEN'S RECOVERY PROJECT ON WHICH I WILL NOT SPECULATE TOO MUCH AT THIS TIME.
