NOXAGT - TURNING IT DOWN SINCE 2001 (LOAD 044)

THE SECOND SCANDINAVIAN GROUP ON LOAD ARE NORWEGIAN TRIO NOXAGT. KJETIL D BRANDSDAL WAS BY THIS POINT A FAIRLY ESTABLISHED NAME IN THE AVANT MUSIC SCENE, RELEASING WORK ON THURSTON MOORE'S ECSTATIC PEACE LABEL AMONG A NUMBER OF OTHERS.

ORIGINALLY A SOLO PROJECT, BRANDSDAL TAKES UP THE BASS GUITAR AND IS JOINED BY JAN-CHRISTIAN KYVIK ON DRUMS AND NILS ERGA ON VIOLA. THEY PLAY A MUSIC THAT I GUESS IS NOT A MILLION MILES REMOVED FROM LIGHTNING BOLT: A HEAVY GRINDING BASS ANCHORING ANIMATED DRUMMING AND A MELODIC SENSIBILITY THAT RIDES THE WAVES. IN FACT THAT IS AN ACCIDENTALLY GOOD METAPHOR. ERGA'S GRINDING VIOLA GIVES THIS A LURCHING AND PROFOUNDLY SEASICK FEEL.

BRANDSDAL'S BASS SOUNDS LIKE RUST HAS SETTLED INTO THE STRINGS AND THE WIRES AND THE AMPLIFICATION. IT'S AN INSTRUMENTAL BAND PLAYING NOISE ROCK ELEGIES FOR A SHIP'S GRAVEYARD. THE DRUMMING IS THE MOST FUNCTIONAL PART OF THE RECORD BUT IT DOES IT *RIGHT*. MOST PIECES ARE MIDTEMPO EXPLORATIONS AND VARIATIONS ON A THEME BUT THEY'RE DONE WITH SUCH GUSTO THAT I CAN'T FIND MUCH FAULT.

IT'S ALL INSTRUMENTAL SO SOME OF THE SONG TITLES LIKE MANHOOD LESSONS, COCKBURN, AND PANTYLAND MIGHT MAKE YOU THINK THAT THIS IS SOME PERVERTED STUFF. THEY'RE JUST TITLES AND YEAH THEY COULD HAVE GONE FOR BETTER ONES. BUT REALLY NAMING INSTRUMENTAL PIECES IS ARBITRARY.

THIS ONE KICKS ASS. CERTIFIED: GOOD.
